
Program, Projects & What We Do
Community Connector - Connecting, supporting and resourcing individuals, families and groups. Whether it be an activity you’re after, therapeutic care or anything in between, people are welcome any time to come into the house for a conversation or you can ring and make an appointment. Simply call us on 03 6433 3219 and ask for Pete.
Community Meals - Free community meals, weekly. Prepared and served by our Hilltop Commercial Kitchen team. To see what we are serving, and when, keep an eye on our Facebook Page.
Spaces Available - Generally at no or little cost we have rooms available for meetings, case conferencing, workshops and training. Available to use: Projector, Large TV, White Board, Laptops, Kitchen Facilities, and Hot Drinks with Catering options.
Office Facilities - Photocopying, Printing, Faxing, Phone Service (call anyone you need within Australia at no cost), Computer Access. Available during business hours.
No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) - The NILS Network of Tasmania provides interest free loans of up to $2000 for various items. Applications are processed by appointment at Burnie Community House. Before you apply, ensure you do the online enquiry and have your email with the info pack and login details. Contact the house to book an appointment and we can process your loan application. Vinnies Van - Feeding the hungry. Vinnies Van is a free mobile service that provides those who experience or that are at risk of homelessness, marginalisation and social isolation; a warm, nutritious meal, fruits and drinks. Information and referrals to other community services and government agencies. Support, compassion and a friendly face. Operating Monday nights from 6pm until 6:30pm at the Burnie Community House, Wiseman Street Shorewell Park.
Needle Syringe Program - The Tasmanian Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is a public health initiative to minimise the spread of blood borne viruses HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B & C among injecting drug users and to the wider community. As a secondary NSP provider we distribute fit packs, other injecting equipment and make referrals.
Hilltop Produce Co-op - Fresh community produce and other items available at no cost or by donation.
Community Garden - Completely maintained by volunteers, join us in the garden. Produce from the garden helps support cooking for programs delivered at the House.
Men’s Community Hub - Meeting weekly on a Thursday morning form a cuppa and a snack. Keep connected with others.
Learner Driver Mentor Program (A2Ps) - Learning to drive is an important life skill, and through the learner driver mentor program it is affordable for those who do not have the means to pay for private lessons or have people to take them for lessons. Kommunity Kids Program - Join local service providers for an afternoon of outdoor play.
French Reading Group - Come and converse, and read with others who are interested in the same.
Curious Chefs - These programs are currently delivered through partnered schools in the Burnie area, and the Child & Family Centre. Please call the House if you would like to discuss this program being ran at your facility. Developing skills and knowledge around food and health literacy. Increasing the ability of families to choose nutritious food. Decreasing the health inequality that exists in communities; leading to improved health and wellbeing.
Youth Unlimited - Delivers a place-based youth development program that provides learning through connection and participation. Co-designed with young people to strengthen social, emotional, cognitive and behavioural competencies. The project takes an organic, ground up approach; putting young people first rather than institutions, working side by side to identify what is strong not what is wrong. Providing innovation in learning, understanding that we are stronger when we listen and smarter when we share.
